Geoff and Dawn Crawley didn’t set out to own and operate a leading regional housecleaning company. “It was a happy accident!” Geoff exclaims. They joined Rescue Me Cleaning in 1997 to help out a friend and acquired the business in 2015. The allure of the autonomy and flexibility you have as business owners prompted them to make the move. They also really wanted to make a difference in their community.
And make a difference they do! Geoff and Dawn are innovative business leaders that not only operate a great service business, they also actively and consistently give back. Rescue Me Cleaning offers free housecleaning service to women undergoing breast cancer treatments through Cleaning for a Reason, a cause near and dear to the Crawleys since they lost Dawn’s mother to breast cancer. Other charities that they support include the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, National Capital Lyme Disease Association, Children’s Medical Nutrition Alliance and Smashing Walnuts.
The company also contributes to better living by providing green cleaning solutions for customers. The European Union has banned over one thousand chemicals in cosmetics, whereas the FDA has banned only nine. Geoff and Dawn know that the products they use to clean homes affect not only their cleaning professionals, but also the homeowners and the environment. So they only use products that are allergy and environmentally friendly.
Dawn’s perspective on another aspect of living green is to eat healthy. “Read labels! Sugar is in most processed foods and is as addictive as cocaine. We really try to avoid processed food altogether. It’s not always easy, but planning is vital. I also recommend only buying food when in season and trying to buy from local farmers. Learn where your food comes from and how it is delivered.”
Rescue Me Cleaning’s motto is to Stop Cleaning and Start Living! The Crawleys firmly believe that a house cleaning service is not a luxury, it’s about quality of life. Dawn explains, “In our efforts to make life easier, we have actually made doing the day-to-day things more difficult. Multi-tasking is actually inefficient and we waste more time trying to do multiple tasks. We want everyone to view having your home professionally cleaned as a utility. Think about how many hours a week you work. That’s not counting the things you do that you don’t get paid for! Our mission is to take away that burden of having to clean the house and free up your valuable time to do the things you love.”
One of the many things Geoff and Dawn love to do is to create traditions that they can do as a family. They like to make gingerbread houses and take them to local hospitals to share with the staff in November. Their kids love decorating them, and creating a tradition that in some way gives back to others can be the most fun for a family.
That family feeling extends to their work family as well. Their average employee has been with the company for over 12 years and their average customer between seven and 15 years. Rescue Me Cleaning creates a supportive work environment for their employees while still helping the community.
In their free time, you can find Geoff cheering for all Philadelphia sports teams and running half marathons. Dawn likes to read and spends time in her garden. “I try to grow enough food to last through the winter and spring until the garden begins to produce. I either can or freeze all of my produce. August is a hectic time of the year for canning! Tomatoes are on every surface EVERYWHERE in the house.” Together they enjoy spending time with their three children Annie, Jackson and Maxwell, traveling, playing video games, camping, and playing with their dog, Bacon.
