Playa Largo Resort & Spa –The Ultimate Girls Getaway
My best girlfriends and I made a pact years ago that we’d go away somewhere amazing the year we all turned 40. This is a group of women I’ve known since childhood, and while there’s never a wrong reason to plan a girls trip, a milestone birthday seems extra deserving of a girlsonly getaway. The challenge in planning any trip with a group of women is choosing a destination and selecting a place to stay that will make everyone happy.
Half of my friends want a trip where they can be active with water sports, sightseeing, and taking in the local flavors and culture. The other half would be happy sitting by a pool bar all day doing nothing but downing multiple cocktails. Without revealing which camp I’m in, I will say its imperative we compromise on a resort where we can relax but will also have plenty of options for activities and excursions. And of course, the food and drinks have to be top notch.
Thanks to Posh Seven Magazine and the recent press trip invitation from Playa Largo Resort and Spa, I had the opportunity to do some preliminary research for our upcoming girls’ getaway. Key Largo, with its quick, direct flight out of Reagan International, is an easy trip for anyone in the DC area.
Playa Largo is a gorgeous large-scale full-service resort situated on 14.5 acres of private beachfront paradise that exudes luxury but in a laid-back casual Floridian way. The resort was just a quick uber ride from Miami International Airport but felt worlds away. A “sunset on the bay” concept is reflected in the aesthetic and a chic, elegant beach house design, complemented by its lush tropical surroundings.
After checking into my beautiful poolside room, I met the rest of the press group for a lively cocktail demonstration and mixology class on the Sunset Terrace off the very cool Las Olas Ceviche bar. Dinner onsite at La Marca followed where I overindulged on steak and seafood. My first meal in Key Largo wouldn’t have been complete without their signature dessert, and I must say Key Lime pie tastes best in the Keys!
I’m happy to report to my girlfriends who believe vacation calories do count, and there is a top-notch fitness facility on site with views of the pool where I spent the next morning relaxing. Later on, we boarded a boat for a parasailing excursion over the Florida Bay. This was conveniently located just down the pier onsite at our resort, which made water activities easy and hassle-free for our group. Parasailing was followed by lunch at Sol by the Sea where I not only enjoyed a delicious seafood lunch but also Instagram-worthy views of the marina and the bay. With the cool breeze coming off the water, tasty cocktails, and conversation shared with new friends I knew I was indeed on a world-class vacation with a group of women feeling as lucky to be at Playa Largo as I was.
We were then treated to an afternoon of relaxation at the fullservice Ocean Spa. Several of the girls choose the Key Largo Signature Massage, but I opted for the Energizing Facial, which I did not regret. Later on that evening, we boarded our private catamaran at the pier for a sunset cruise which included a champagne toast, music, and a few dolphin sightings.
Our group disembarked and walked over to our private “Toes in the Sand Dinner” right on the beach. Our meal, lit by tiki torches, was personally selected and prepared by Playa Largo’s renowned head Chef and included sushi, roasted snapper, and decadent desserts. It was the perfect day, and I only felt slightly guilty checking in on my husband and kids later to discover they had leftover spaghetti for dinner. Moms deserve a break, and I was undoubtedly enjoying mine!
Over the next few days, I enjoyed a mix of beach and pool-time relaxation coupled with opportunities to explore and experience the keys. Snorkeling was a favorite activity of mine as was a delicious lunch off-site at the famed Fish House Restaurant. Playa Largo offered a great home base to explore the Keys even though the comfort of my beach chair was sometimes hard to leave.
Our 40th birthday trip is already in the works. Playa Largo checks all the boxes and will be the perfect place to create memories with my girlfriends that will last a lifetime. There is no better place for a girl’s getaway whether to celebrate a bachelorette, a birthday, or no reason at all. Consider Playa Largo for your next getaway (husbands optional!) as it truly is a place where you can truly disconnect, kick back, and experience everything that makes the Keys, the Keys.
