StoneSprings Hospital Center Introduces Bariatric Surgery Program

StoneSprings Hospital Center today announced the opening of a new bariatric surgery program, offering surgical weight loss services and minimally invasive robotic surgery to patients across Northern Virginia.

Bariatric surgery, also called weight loss surgery, greatly benefits patients who are considered morbidly obese, allowing these patients to lose excess weight and live longer with a higher quality of life. Weight loss surgery has been proven to help reduce patients’ symptoms and/or chances of developing diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obstructive sleep apnea, and arthritis.

The new program at StoneSprings Hospital Center will feature minimally invasive, laparoscopic, and robotic techniques, which allow surgeons to operate using tiny incisions and instruments. Minimally invasive and laparoscopic procedures often result in less pain following surgery, a shortened hospital stay, a shorter recovery time, and a lower risk of complications and infection.

With bariatric surgery, the stomach size is reduced, therefore patients consume drastically less food yet feel full and satisfied. Some surgical options also alter the body’s absorption of fat and calories.

“Patients who are candidates for bariatric surgery are already facing high risks from serious health issues because of their excess weight, explains Dr. Masoud Rezvani, medical director of StoneSprings Hospital Center’s bariatric surgery. “The surgery and a full program of support help them to lose weight and reduce or eliminate those risks.”

The bariatric surgery program at StoneSprings Hospital Center includes coordinated services from surgeons, registered bariatric dietitians, fitness experts, behavioral specialists, and weight-loss support groups. These specialists help patients understand their surgical weight loss options, guide them through the surgery process and prepare them for life after their procedure.

“Bringing advanced surgical weight loss options to our community promotes health and longevity,” said Nathan Vooys, StoneSprings Hospital Center’s chief executive officer, “Bariatric surgery has been shown to improve a patient’s outlook and quality of life.”
