Washington Redskins greats Brian Mitchell and Santana Moss believe in The Salvation Army and its work. They also believe in investing in children in the community. That’s why, on Saturday, September 28, Brian and Santana will be lacing up their running shoes and hitting the pavement as The Salvation Army Fairfax Corps hosts its TEAM UP! 5K to raise funds for the organization’s After School Programs in Fairfax County.

The Salvation Army Fairfax Corps has been providing free, after-school programs to less fortunate children and their families since 2002. These programs offer musical instruction, homework help, on-site recreation and character development—free of charge. Most children who participate in these programs do not have access to have these experiences otherwise.

The programs have seen great results in students’ engagement and educational enrichment. The Fairfax Corps’ offices have also dedicated more physical space to the program to support its growth. “Last school year, there were 40 children enrolled in our after school programs. As the need in Fairfax County grows, we are preparing for our enrollment to grow as well.” reports Major Donald Wilson, Salvation Army Fairfax Corps Officer.

However, with higher demand for The Salvation Army’s services and ever-increasing costs of living in the National Capital region, key programs like the Fairfax Corps’ After School Programs are under financial strain. The hopes of serving more in need is becoming limited. Here is how you can help! Support The Salvation Army Fairfax Corps and students in your community by TEAM-ing UP! and joining The Salvation Army’s second annual 5K run.

The TEAM UP! 5K will start and finish at The Salvation Army offices located at 4915 Ox Rd, Fairfax. The race kicks off at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 28, 2019. Participants who register before Tuesday, September 10 will receive a race t-shirt and other goodies. Specialty Redskins merchandise will be available. All proceeds from the race will go directly to benefit the Fairfax Corps’ After School Programs.

Race support packages are available. Please contact Stacy Burke at (703) 385-8700. Sponsorship packages include motivational presentations by Brian Mitchell, scholarships to Santana Moss’ Moss Academy Football Camp in Ashburn and free team runner registrations.
