Home » The 2021 D.C. Polar Plunge Invites You to Plunge from Home
Special Olympics D.C. is inviting its community of supporters to take the plunge this year from the comfort of their own homes. In January and February 2021, participants can virtually plunge anytime and submit a video to social media. The Polar Plunge will culminate in a virtual celebration event on February 27 with a highlight reel of the submitted plunge videos and announcement of top fundraisers.
“We are thrilled to offer the Polar Plunge virtually this year and we are even more excited to see how participants decide to take the plunge from home,” said Nicole Preston, President and CEO of Special Olympics D.C. “It is more important now than ever that we continue to support our athletes, and we hope that by giving participants the opportunity to plunge from home, families can still get the thrill of the polar plunge and raise important funds safely.”
To participate in the Polar Plunge, individuals must raise a minimum of $100 to receive the commemorative 2021 Polar Plunge T-shirt, or mask and hand sanitizer. Participants can submit a video “taking the plunge” for a chance to win even bigger prizes between January 1, 2021 and February 14, 2021. These videos can range from individuals or families plunging into their pools, bathtubs filled with ice, or bodies of water of all sizes. Participants can submit their plunge videos to [email protected]
Special Olympics D.C. is also inviting participants to “take the plunge” in a way that is special or meaningful to them this year as an alternative to dunking in ice cold water. “We are inviting people to plunge by doing something they have never done before, whether it’s something like skiing their first black diamond, or even proposing to a significant other. We have even heard someone will be water skiing on the Potomac! We can’t wait to see how people will get creative this year,” added Preston.
Too Chicken to Plunge but still want to help? Donations are welcome to show your support of Special Olympics D.C. athletes, or fundraise to sponsor an athlete’s plunge. Participant involvement is critical in helping Special Olympics D.C. athletes achieve their goals and show that the community embraces acceptance and inclusion. The Plunge provides nearly 25% of all funding each year. Money raised from the Plunge goes directly to facility rentals for the winter sports, athlete uniforms and equipment and championship costs like medals and awards.
