The Rise of Retirement Communities & What it Means for the Golden Years

Senior housing is on the rise, as more people age into their golden years—and Northern Virginia is no exception to the national trend. By 2030, one in five Americans will be 65 or over, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

In Loudoun County, where the median household age is 36, several senior housing developments have opened just in the past year, to meet demand. Some of them have a focus on memory care and others offer multiple levels of care.

The demand is not just coming from local senior residents, says Mark Frazier, marketing manager of Waltonwood Ashburn, a retirement community that opened in November 2017 in Ashburn. Says Frazier, “[We are] seeing more than 50% of [our] residents moving from other states, to be near their families who live in or around Loudoun County.” Residents have moved from places as far away as New York, Tennessee, Florida, and California.

In addition to bringing families closer together, senior living communities like Waltonwood are an easy sell for a number of reasons. Security and socialization are among the biggest benefits for residents. Furthermore, communities today resemble a vacation resort, with amenities such as movie theaters, spas, bistros, and more.

As you weigh options, there are a few things to consider outside of luxurious amenities. Some communities offer minimal or no services if your circumstances change and are not able to live independently, while others are prepared to provide assisted living and even skilled medical care if needed. The types of retirement communities also vary in rental and purchasing agreements.

Although the field is vast, we at Posh Seven have highlighted three top retirement communities in our area, including two in Ashburn and a military-retirement community in Potomac Falls. Read on for a glimpse of what life may be like for senior residents in these communities:

For those with a sweet tooth, Waltonwood employs a fulltime pastry chef, on site, to create decadent, handcrafted desserts and pastries every day. The community also has a full-time exercise physiologist, who performs one-on-one personal training with residents and water aerobics in the heated, saltwater pool. If that doesn’t sound luxurious enough, you should know there is plenty more to amuse seniors at Waltonwood.

Marketing manager Mark Frazier says the goal is for residents to enjoy a worry- free lifestyle. “No longer do residents have to worry about what’s for dinner, if they paid the gas bill, or how they’re going to stay active. No longer are families of seniors having to worry about their loved ones—with 24/7 concierge, daily check-ins, and a portable emergency help button,” he tells Posh Seven.

Waltonwood offers a full continuum of care, so seniors can age in place. From independent living, to assisted living, to memory care: residents and families have peace of mind, knowing they have access to different levels of living all on one campus. Residents sign a 12-month lease and pay rent monthly, which includes a number of services and amenities.

Senior living doesn’t mean you have to be tucked away from the action. In fact you can live amongst it at Tribute, which is located in the heart of One Loudoun. This facility gives seniors the option of walkable amenities in addition to the enormous services on site. The 140-unit community features a full service hair salon, a movie theater with surround sound, a wellness center with equipment designed specifically for seniors, and a sports bar, to name a few.

When describing their approach to seniors, Les Strech (President of parent company Thrive Senior Living) says, “We started with a radical proposition: there is value in every resident’s life. They have experiences, and stories, and challenges that make them unique. So why should they settle for an ordinary community? From the moment you walk in to Tribute, residents have a built-in set of friends (officially, we call them team members) dedicated to their every need.”

The Tribute at One Loudoun provides great lifestyle options for seniors, ranging from options that benefit those who are completely independent to those who need more care—including memory care for seniors with varying levels of dementia. When people think about senior living, they often see negatives like frailty and disability. Tribute sees so much more. They see wisdom. They see laughter and ability, growth, and potential.
